In his book, The Surrender Experiment, author Michael A. Singer describes his incredible journey that started as a quest to quiet the constant chatter in his head. You know, that incessant internal dialogue we all have, not unlike a nervous dog yapping at everything that moves? Singer set out to shut that voice up and make it stop ruling his life. After years of experimenting with various brands of meditation and other techniques, he had a significant breakthrough when he simply decided to surrender.
He decided to let go. Instead of fighting the voice, he would just observe it without judgment. No more fighting. No more resistance. Just observation.
He decided to employ this approach to everything in his life. He would no longer resist the decisions and situations arising in his life. He would instead just surrender to whatever the universe lay before him. He was fully committed to following the path before him, whatever it looked like and wherever it led.
Without spoiling the entire book, suffice it to say that the things that happened to Singer, as a result, were nothing short of miraculous. His strong message, in conclusion, is that the universe is out to help you. It seeks to provide you with everything you need to live a beautiful and magical life. It will always take care of you if you’ll only listen.
This philosophy is very much in line with our approach to health and wellness. We know that the human body has an innate capacity for self-healing. We know that if we just “get out of the way” and allow its natural tendency towards health and vitality to proceed unencumbered, it can repair even the most crippling of injuries and dis-ease.
We, humans, put so much effort into thinking - so much energy into figuring out solutions – how to be happy, how to prosper, how to be vital and healthy. In our hubris, we believe we can solve everything by thinking when the answers are already within us. The answers do not reside in our brains, but in that part of us connected to everything, our spirit or soul.
So consider stopping your efforts to figure everything out. Try just surrendering. Your body can heal itself, your soul can find peace, and life can unfold in the most beautiful and serendipitous ways.
If you’d like to hear the author describe this in his own words, here is a good podcast with Michael A. Singer:
